Can you really get the pill online?
Yes — for most healthy women, the oral contraceptive pill can be prescribed via a telehealth consult with an AHPRA-registered Australian GP. After your appointment, an electronic script is sent directly to your preferred pharmacy.
It's a genuine alternative to waiting for a clinic appointment, taking time off work, or running out of your current supply. The same standards of medical care apply — it's simply delivered more conveniently.
How the process works
First, you book a telehealth consult at a time that suits you. During the appointment, your GP will ask about your medical history, blood pressure, any medications you take, and whether you've used the pill before.
If the pill is a safe and appropriate option for you, your GP sends an e-script to your pharmacy. For ongoing scripts, a care plan can arrange repeat renewals so you never run out.
When is telehealth not enough?
If you're starting the pill for the first time, your GP may ask you to have your blood pressure checked first. Some medical conditions also mean the pill isn't suitable, and your GP will discuss alternatives.
Long-acting methods like an IUD or implant require an in-person procedure, but your GP can still provide counselling and a referral via telehealth.
