What is inositol?

Inositol is a type of sugar found naturally in fruits, beans, and grains. It's involved in insulin signalling, which is why it's attracted interest for PCOS — a condition closely linked to insulin resistance.

The two most studied forms are myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol. These are available as over-the-counter supplements and have been the subject of growing research in recent years.

What the evidence shows

Several studies suggest that inositol supplementation may help improve insulin sensitivity, cycle regularity, and ovulation in women with PCOS. The evidence is promising enough that it's increasingly recommended by clinicians, though more research is still needed.

Inositol appears to be generally well-tolerated with few side effects. However, as with any supplement, quality and dosing vary between products, and it's not a substitute for medical treatment.

Should you try it?

If you have PCOS and are looking for a supplement to support your treatment, inositol is one of the more evidence-based options. But it's important to discuss it with your GP first — they can advise on dosing, check for interactions, and make sure it fits into your overall treatment plan.

Inositol is generally used alongside — not instead of — other treatments like lifestyle changes, the pill, or metformin. Your GP can help you decide if it's the right addition for you.
